About Surya
Surya is a difficult person to define or pin down, because his interests and passions are so incredibly varied. He is extremely focused by nature, staying extremely on the cutting edge—often many years ahead of trends. Operating way outside the box, Surya has often taken the road way less traveled.
Surya is intense about the things he is passionate about, though he refuses to take himself too seriously and loves to laugh. His hearty laugh will relax you, opening your heart.
Surya's main core has always been the Pursuit of Truth, both small and large, relative and Absolute, and then generously sharing his findings and knowledge with others so that they can thrive and benefit in their own lives.
Surya has achieved quite a numerous collage of certifications, but to be honest
he always states that he puts little value in a piece a paper, instead prizing
Knowledge that he can communicate and transfer to his clients. Surya preferred
to apprentice under great teachers in disciplines in which he had interest.
Some of his certifications are:
Certified Personal Trainer
Master Personal Trainer
Masters in Holistic Nutrition
Certified Nutritionist
Certified Sports Nutrition Consultant
Certificate in Raw Foods Preparation
Certified to teach True Himalayan Yoga from several Yogis in the Himalayas
Doctor of Divinity
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film/TV (NYU-Tisch)
Health, Nutrition, Fitness, Movement & Meditation have always been amongst Surya's main passions. He started working out with weights at age 10, was naturally athletic and applied his efforts in several athletic disciplines. Surya began training others at age 16, a few months before starting college (he graduated a year early from HS). At the same time he started teaching aerobics, muscle toning, & martial arts classes. A few years later he added yoga asana classes to his niche and advanced his training. Later in life, he would journey to India and the Himalayas numerous times, receiving extensive, in-depth training in True Himalayan Yoga and receive the Blessings and Instruction from several Himalayan Yoga Masters to pass on what he had learned.
At 17, after rediscovering Yogic Philosophy & reading "Survival into the 21st Century" by Viktoras Kulvinskas, followed by many other books the subject of health and diet, Surya gave up red meat, followed by giving up chicken, turkey, fish and eggs with the following year. He lived vegan for about 5 years with over a year just on raw foods, until his body started asking him for yoghurt and he added organic dairy back into his diet in small amounts. He is in tune with his body and has learned to listen to it. During and since that time, he read and digested at least 1008 books on the subject of health, diet and fitness, while going to study personally with giants in each of those fields. He continues dialogues with the leaders in these disciplines, being a leader himself, believing in staying open, open minded and on the cutting edge.
Surya has always found the most value though in applying what he learn to his own life, testing things out for himself first, innovating them further and then sharing his discoveries of what works with others. This is what drove him to the important work of instructing and sharing health, diet and fitness to this day.
While studying film/tv at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts in a class with M. Night Shyamalan and others, he met the editor of NY Bodies, a great health and fitness publication in New York City at the time. He was so impressed and blown away by Surya and his unique vegetarian approach that he wrote an article on him, his unique approach to training, and his unusual vegetarian diet, and supplements of choice—blue-green algae and bee pollen. For the exercise training world at the time, this was unheard of. The article was published on the back page of the magazine and his career exploded overnight, resulting in a waiting list of clients who wanted to work with him; his Path became clear. Surya started a column for NY Bodies as well, writing on many controversial subjects in the health, nutrition and fitness fields, creating quite a stir. He laughs when thinking about it, stating that was a great deal of fun!
A few years later, Surya became the Nutrition & Fitness Editor of an even greater Health & Fitness publication called Healthmap, having a column regularly read by 500,000+ people.
In 1997, pending the birth of his first daughter, Kanyakumari Devi (meaning the Daughter Goddess without imperfection or flaw), Surya moved back (he lived here briefly in 1993-94) to tranquil vibrations of one of the latest little surf towns left, Leucadia, California, home to meditators, surfers and artsy folk. He then started his private personal exercise and nutritional/dietary consultation business over once again, moving beyond its original title and scope of "Holistic Personal Training", to its current upgrade of WOHLISTIC Personal Training. After all, "Beyond Holistic is WOHLISTIC!!!" Since 1997 he has provided his personal training and nutritional services for private clients in Rancho Santa Fe, Fairbanks Ranch, Santa Luz, Leucadia, Encinitas, Carlsbad, La Costa, Cardiff, Solana Beach, Del Mar & La Jolla.
Surya is also an accomplished healer, though he was always shy about publicizing this. Trained in several bodywork modalities and receiving the blessings, training, and passing down a pleuthora of sacred healing techniques from over 108 Spiritual Masters, Shamans, Yogis and Healers, he often provided deep muscular release bodywork and energetic healings, when appropriate and desired, for his clients. He has now decided to offer these on a much larger scale. Surya's system of Energetic Healing is unique. He calls it "Energy Flow Realignment". He also sets up sacred spaces, altars, meditation/prayer rooms for clients, does house cleansings/clearings and teaches meditation.
